Our history

The Hotel Schlemmer, one of the oldest inns in Europe, has its roots in the old town of Montabaur and an impressive history. Built in 1573, the “Zur Crone” inn can be traced back to the early modern era. From 1673, the inn held the concession for the post office, which gave it a central role in travel and trade in the region. At that time, the innkeeper Andreas Winden was known as the “Schildwirt”, a term that referred to the right to display a sign indicating to travelers passing through that they could find accommodation here with their horse and cart. Other citizens of the town were forbidden from accommodating strangers, giving the inn a monopoly position. In the 19th century, Heinrich Caspar Schlemmer took over the running of the “Zur Krone” inn. Under his management, the inn flourished and developed into a popular meeting place for travelers, merchants, locals and visitors alike. Its central location and reputation for warm hospitality contributed significantly to its popularity. In 1901, Peter Höhn took over the hotel, which has remained in the family to this day. During the Second World War, the hotel served as a refuge and later as temporary accommodation for displaced persons. Despite these difficult times, the Hotel Schlemmer recovered and once again became a symbol of consistency and hospitality in Montabaur.
